Spring, 1935. Shuzo Kadokura, president of a successful munitions factory, still has an eye for the ladies, even though he is married. Senkichi Mizuta, a modest businessman, is very much family oriented. However, despite their differences in personality, they have been friends for more than 20 years.
Kimiko, Kadokura’s wife, arranges a meeting between Mizuta’s daughter Satoko and Yoshihiko, a university student. Mizuta is against the match when he discovers Yoshihiko’s family is too socially, prominent. Yet, Satoko and Yoshihiko are attracted to each other and secretly continue to meet. Meanwhile, Mizuta’s wife Tami and Kadokura sense a mutual attraction which they try to conceal.
One day, Kadokura takes Mizuta to a geisha house where they meet Mari-Yakko. The once-faithful Mizuta quickly becomes infatuated, much to the dismay of Kadokura, who sees that Tami is being hurt by the affair. So he decides, with his good looks, charm and money to steal Mari-Yakko away to ease Tami’s pain. But these results in alienating his wife and ruining his friendship with Mizuta.Meanwhile, Yoshihiko is arrested by the police for seeing a single girl and during wartime this was considered immoral. Mizuta insists that Satoko stop seeing him, but he cannot change her mind. When Mizuta’s company decides to transfer him to Java, Kadokura hears of it and drops by to bid farewell. Yoshihiko also comes by to bid farewell to Satoko he has been drafted into the military. Kadokura advises her to go after him and spend one last night together.
Then, for the first time in a long time,Kadokura, Mizuta and Tami relax over sake, just like old times.
